Green Living Seminars
Starflower Experiences holds monthly Green Living Seminars the 2nd Thursday of each month (except July and August) from 7-9 pm. We want to help people think about their life choices and their impact on the earth and learn about ways they can personally lessen their impact. Come and learn how to live a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle. These will be held at the Melville Branch of the Half Hollow Hills Library at 510 Sweet Hollow Road, directly across from the Sunquam School.

March 13: Four Steps to a Toxic-free, Organic Lawn with Beth Fiteni (& others) of the LI Neighborhood Network
Want to have a green, healthy lawn but without using harmful chemicals? Come learn practical, effective methods, in a ‘four step” process, to help your lawn build up natural defenses to diseases and pests. We’ll explain why the organic approach is different from a traditional chemical approach, and what products to look for. Each participant will receive:

  • Instructional, ‘how to’ information on using organic methods and products for turf
  • A list of local organic landscapers

April 10: Energy Independence Day with Bill Lauto
Most Americans are paying 60% more than they have to in energy costs. Learn the details to lowering your energy bills without conservation or sacrifice. Nobody has to put on a sweater and lower the thermostat to save. We will teach you the trade secrets and details that will allow you to lower your thermostat and not need a sweater. These details include electric, gas, and oil consumption. We have the technology, we don’t need foreign oil.

May 8th: How to make green changes in your home, from inside out
Laura Weinberg, president of the Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition, will help you identify the toxins in your home and will give you tips on safer, greener alternatives to using toxic pesticides, cleaning and personal care products.
This month's seminar is part of the Prevention is the Cure educational series May 8-24.

June 12: Solar Energy Education
Learn how Solar Electric and Solar Hot Water work, and how much you can save on oil and gas. A staff member from The Solar Center, will be presenting information specific to LIPA customers as well as tax incentives and how it works. GO GREEN and reduce your carbon footprint!

September 11: Energy Enhancements to Increase the Value of Your Home
Learn how to increase your home’s value with some simple energy-efficient upgrades. From CFL light bulbs to energy audits, there are many ways to save money on your energy costs. These savings translate into a higher value when it comes time to sell your home. Local REALTOR Marilyn Urso has the information. As a Certified EcoBroker, she will share her knowledge on how to reduce your carbon footprint and GO GREEN to GET GREEN!

October 16: Community Supported Agriculture
NOTE: This is the 3rd Thursday due to the Jewish Holiday!
Yes, we have Community Supported Agriculture here on Long Island. Caroline Fanning of Restoration Farm will explain how CSA’s work, how they fit into the broader organic movement, what challenges they face and give an overview of their project at Restoration Farm (at Nassau County’s Old Bethpage Restoration).

November 13: Healthy Clean Homes with Stan Halpern
