Let the Sun Shine
Quad State Solar lets the sun shine

Green Living Seminars
Starflower Experiences holds monthly Green Living Seminars the 2nd Thursday of each month (except July and August) from 7-9 pm. We want to help people think about their life choices and their impact on the earth and learn about ways they can personally lessen their impact. Come and learn how to live a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle. These will be held at the Melville Branch of the Half Hollow Hills Library at 510 Sweet Hollow Road, directly across from the Sunquam School.

November 10: Going Green Without Going Broke
Learn ways to preserve the environment and your wallet through water and energy conservation. A presentation will be given on using solar energy to reduce utility costs, why it has become the fastest growing energy source in the world, and how it offers a limitless supply of clean safe, renewable energy for heat and power. Jonathan Lane, who founded Quad State Solar in 2000, will be giving the seminar. He has 10 years of experience designing, selling, and installing grid-connected and stand-alone PV systems. Mr. Lane is one of very few professionals in the field who hold both a NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) certification as well as an ISP (Institute for Sustainable Power) Training accreditation. Mr. Lane is the lead instructor at SUNY Farmingdale’s Solar Energy Center, as well as several other CUNY divisions, and has been involved in design, sales, and installation of residential and commercial PV systems.

December 8: Who wants leftovers and mushrooms? - your garden does
In this seminar we will be going over different ways of turning your food waste into mineral rich soil. We will review all the composting varieties but will be focusing mostly on the Japanese composting system "bokashi". Bokashi uses less space, has less bad odor and turns your leftovers into rich soil faster then all other composting methods. We will end this seminar by also mentioning how fungi root systems can benefit your garden.

January 12: What are your food connections?
Start the journey by learning where a can of Coke is from-all the ingredients (and the can, too). Then look at other common foods and find out why there's a locovore movement (encouraging people to eat locally).

February 9: Long Island: from paradise to suburbia
Take a look at how the history of European settlement on Long Island affected the landscape and wildlife and vice versa.

March 8: Edible Landscaping
Edible Landscaping is the use of food producing plants, such as fruit and nut bearing trees, berry bushes, vegetables, herbs, edible flowers and ornamental plants into a pleasing design adaptable to any garden style. With Master Gardener Eileen Anders.
